The Foolish Shepherd Boy

There was a little shepherd boy who lived in a far away village with his mother. He used to take his flock of sheep to the hill-side for grazing everyday. Everybody was very nice to the shepherd boy, but on the contrary he was a very mischievous boy.

He liked to play tricks on the villagers. His mother often asked him not to do like that. She advised that on one or other day his mischievous behavior would turn as a danger to him. But the boy doesn't care and listened to his mother's words.

One day the shepherd was tending the sheep. The sheep kept grazing but the boy felt bored. So he thought of having fun at the cost of his fellow-villagers. Standing on a high rock, the boy noticed all the villagers were busy at their field work.

Suddenly the boy cried at the top of his voice, "Wolf! Wolf! Come to save me and my sheep". At first nobody listen to his voice. But the boy doesn't stopped shouting. He again shouted "Wolf! Wolf! Help! Help!". This time on listening to the shepherd boy's screaming voice, all the villagers came running. The villagers rushed out with big sticks to help the boy.

As he saw the panicked villagers he started to laugh heartily and said, "Ha! Ha! What a fun. You people actually thought that there was some wolf around. If there been any wolf, I would have shot him away".

On seeing the boy boastful comment the villagers got irritated and went away. The Shepherd boy does the same trick for other two times and each time the villagers came running. At last one day a wolf really came and ate couple of the sheep.

The shepherd boy shouted for help but there was none to listen to him. Everyone thought he was joking once again.

Moral : Once a liar, always a liar.

The Fox and the Sour Grapes

Once upon a time a fox was roaming in the forest. It was a hot summer day. The fox felt very hungry and thirsty. The fox wanted to quench it's thirst immediately.

While it was roaming, luckily he crossed a vineyard. There he saw a grapevine with bunches of grapes. They looked quite ripe and juicy. The fox looked at the grapes longing for it and it's mouth started watering. The fox was sure that he could eat them up and appease his hunger. But he was feeling weak.

So, the fox sat down for a while under the vineyard to take rest. Then after sometimes feeling refreshed he jumped as high as he could, to get at the grapes. But to it's bad luck the bunches were too high for him.

The fox once again rested for a while and made another bold attempt of jumping high. But he failed to reach the grapes this time too. Forced to give up trying anymore he walked away.

Instead of owning his failure, he remarked with an air of dignity, "I thought those grapes to be ripe and juicy. But now I see that they must be quite soar".

Moral : People easily hate what they can’t get.

The Evil Minded Lion

Once a lion, king of the forest had grown old so it was not able to catch it's prey for his food. He said to himself that he has to do something alternative in order to escape from starvation till death.

The lion gets tensed and said to himself, "I must do something to stay my stomach filled otherwise I am sure to die out to starvation". The lion thought and thought and at last an idea struck him. He decided to resort a cunning plan that he would lie down in his cave pretending to be ill, who ever came to enquire about his health has to be his prey for that day.

Thus the old lion was ready to execute his plan from the very next day. The old lion put his wicked plan into practice and it worked successfully. Many of his beloved friends and even well-wishers were killed.

But this evil deeds of the lion had a very short period of life. One day a fox came to visit the ailing lion. Foxes are cleaver enough than other animals.

So the fox which came to see the lion stood at the mouth of the cave and looked about. His sixth sense worked and he came to know the reality and what had happened before inside the cave of the lion. So cleverly it stands outside the cave and he called out to the lion and said, "How do you feel, sir?".

"Really bad," said the lion, "but why are you standing outside the cave my dear, please come inside". I would love to come in, sir, but I see that all foot marks point into your cave and none points out of it".

Saying so, the fox did not waited for the lion's reply and it just ran away from that place. It also made alert about the lion to the other animals too.

Moral : Evil has a very short life.

The Kingship of a Foolish Monkey

We all know that Lion is the king of the jungle. But the trend has been changed so in every forest all the animals gathered together to choose their king. One day all the animals of a forest had a gathering to choose their king. All the animals exhibited their talents.

Among them the monkey danced with such way that everyone was delighted and pleased and they all laughed throughout the day. So, the monkey's name was proposed for kingship. Everyone voted for the monkey and it was made as the jungle king.

But every party has an opposite party. The fox could not tolerate the leadership of monkey. The fox did not like the monkey's rise to the high position. He felt jealous of him and decided to humiliate him.

One day the fox, roaming in search of food, saw a trap laid by some hunters. In the middle of the trap a meat piece was kept as a bait. The fox was sensible enough to keep away from the trap. But he was sure that the monkey couldn’t escape from the trap.

The fox expected for this time to come. So, he quickly approached the king and brought him to the trap. "Here is a dainty piece of meat sir. As I am your true servant I offer things to you. I didn't touch it. So, enjoy it to your honour".

As the monkey extended his hands and tried to take the meat, it was caught in the trap. On seeing this the fox laughed loudly and said, "you fool, kingship needs a lot of wisdom, that was not with you".

Moral : High rank needs high sense.

The Old Farmer and his Lazy Sons

Once there was an old farmer who was very hard working throughout his life. He had a rich field which gave him a fine yield of grapes every year. Unluckily his sons were very lazy and easy-going. So, the farmer was much worried about their future.

One day the farmer called his sons and said, "Dear sons! My days are numbered. Before my death I want to tell you about the hidden treasure in our field. Dig it out after my death". The farmer died after a few days.

After performing the last rites of their father, the sons began to dig their field. They dug every inch of it but they could not found anything. So the sons sowed some seeds in their field.

A few weeks later, there was good rain. Soon the field was filled with rich crop of grapes as had never been there before even in their father's life-time. Now the lazy sons understood what their father meant as the hidden treasure.

From that day, they worked hard and earned their own livelihood. They had learnt that hard-work is the key to a gold mine.

Moral : Hardwork has it's reward surely.

The Mother Crab

Have you ever seen a Crab walking on land? It walks as if tilted to one side. It's body is such that it could not walk straight. And it is a fact that all the crab on the earth walked tilted to one side. And the fact is true. The crabs are found on the bank's of the rivers or near sea shore.

One day a mother crab was sitting on the bank of a river and she was watching her young son playing nearby. The mother was feeling very happy to see her son moving fast in the sand. Suddenly the mother noticed something different in her son's behavior.

She saw that her son walked tilting his body side-ways and not straight. She was much worried about it. She wanted him to walk straight. For a moment the mother crab forget about her way of walking and about all the other crabs.

Suddenly she called her son and advised him not to walk side ways instead she asked him to walk straight. On hearing her advise the son not even refused or argued with his mother. He humbly asked his mother to teach him how to walk.

"Show me, dear mother, how to walk straight. I shall follow your example", replied the young crab. The mother now tried her best to walk straight but she could not do it. Now she realized her mistake.

Moral : Before finding fault with others look at yourself.

The Boastful Tradesman

Once there was a trader who often went abroad in connection with his business. When he became old he had to transact his business to his son. His young son began to handle all his business.

The young trader was very boastful by nature. From his school days he used to boast about his father and his trips to abroad. He made all to listen to his talks. This continued for many years. Even after he had grown up as a business man, he could not change his nature of boastfulness.

The young trader went on e business travel abroad. This was his first business trip and so he had visited many new people and saw many new things. He was really thrilled to see them all.

Returning home, the young trader felt impatient to tell the wonderful experiences and thrills to his friends. When they were around him, he told them about the surprising things happened abroad. Among them, he boasted of an exploit of his own.

The young man said, "Friends when I was at Paris, I took part in a jumping competition and none could beat me in long jump. Everyone praised me and I became the talk of the town. If you go to Paris just enquire about me".

Everyone listening to him nodded, but one listener said, "We needn’t go to Paris. Why can't you prove your talent in front of us here?". The young trader had no words to say. So he went silently without saying anything from that place.

Moral : More boasts don’t make us big.

The Story of the Wind and the Sun

We all know well that North wind is very very cold as it comes from the ice-capped mountains. North wind monsoon climate is the very cold climate which make people shiver all over the world even in the warm countries.

On seeing people shivering hard in the North wind period, the North wind came to a false conclusion that it was due to his strength. So it became pride about it’s strength and it even challenged his strength with the strength of the scorching sun.

But the sun which gives brightness and warmth to the earth was very humble and it stands in its character as a SUN. It does not bother about the boastful statements of the North wind. The sun tried to smile away the wind’s challenge but the wind often insisted on a trial of their strength.

So, the sun had to agree with the wind for a challenge. They decided to have their trial upon a traveller. The one who could make the traveller, strip of his shirt was to be the winner.

The wind came first to try. Gathering all his force and fury, it gave a heavy blow upon the man to make the man’s cloak get off his body. But the man wrapped it even harder round him than before.

Now it was the Sun’s turn. He beamed at first gently. Feeling the cosy warmth, the traveller unwrapped his cloak and hung it from his shoulder. As the sun shone brightly, he threw it off. So, the sun emerged as the winner.

Moral : Fury doesn’t pay at all.

Sticky Honey and the Flies

Once a farmer saw a huge honey comb at the top of the tree. He thought of getting the honey from the comb and take it for his house-hold purposes. So the farmer tried his level best and procured honey from the honey-comb by smoking away all the bees of the comb.

He put the honey in a mud pot and took it to his house. To his bad luck the pot fell from his hands and it was broken. All the honey spitted on the ground.

As the honey was so sticky, it would not leave the spot where it was spit. So the farmer finding it difficult to recover the honey, went away disappointed by cursing him a lot.

Just then a swarm of flies came there. As they smell the flavour of the honey, they were very much attracted to it. Without having the knowledge that the honey would catch them badly they all sat on the sticky honey.

Having had their fill, they tried to fly away. But the honey did not let them to be free at all. Their feet and wings had got fast struck to it. All the flies began to cry and they all tried to free their legs and wings by lifting each other but all their efforts ended in failure.

One of the flies cried "How stupid of us. For a short time of pleasure, we have to die an untimely death". But it was too late that all the flies died one by one within a short period.

Moral : No use of repenting when it is too late.

The Hare and the Tortoise

Once a hare went to a pool to quench his thirst. There he chanced to see a slow-moving tortoise and mocked at it. The tortoise felt pinched and challenged the hare for a race. The hare was surprised to see a tortoise challenging for a race. So it accepted the challenge with a smile and a day was fixed for it.

On the fixed day, the race began early in the morning. As expected the hare left the tortoise far behind. After reaching a certain distance the hare felt hungry. So it stopped and began to eat blades of the green grass.

Having his stomach filled, the hare felt sleepy. He said to himself. "Let me wait for the tortoise, as soon as the tortoise comes, I'll jump up and win the race".

Seeing a shady bush nearby, he laid down under it. Soon he felt asleep there itself. As the tortoise was quite away the hare had no worry. So it had a sound sleep. As for the tortoise, it plugged along its path slowly and it passed away the sleeping hare. The tortoise won the race, silently passing by the sleeping hare.

When the hare awoke it was terribly late. He feared that the tortoise might have passed by him. At that time it heard the clapping sound of the other animals and the hare found that his rival tortoise was already there as a winner.

Moral : Slow and steady wins the race.

The Clever Fisherman

There was a fisherman who lived near by a river. Everyday he went for fishing in the river and he sold the fish in the market and earned his livelihood.

One day the fisherman went for fishing in the river as usual. He cast his net into the river and sat waiting for the fish to get into the net. The fisherman wanted his daughter to get married. So he had to earn more money by selling the fish.

He dreamt of as if he was conducting his daughter's marriage in a grand manner by getting a good yield of fish from the river. The burning sun disturbed him and he came to reality. He expected a very good catch.

The fisherman drew the net up and he was very much shocked because he saw only one single tiny fish in it. Taking the fish out, he put it into his basked. He cast his net again into the river for another try.

At that time the tiny fish begged him, "Please sir, leave me back into the river otherwise I will die within a few minutes". "Why should I?" asked the fisherman.

"I am very small now, so, I am of little use for you. But after a few days, I shall grow fairly big. You can catch me at that time that I shall be more useful to you," replied the fish.

But the fisherman refused to leave the fish from his hands. He said that, "I am not going to be foolish in any way. It is well said that we should not give up certain things for the uncertain".

Moral : A bird in hand is worth than two in bush.

The Fox and the Goat

Once a fox was roaming in the forest. It was thirsty. Eventually he found a well, but the water was only at the bottom of the well. The fox studied the problem and realized that there was a pulley system with two buckets to bring up the water. One bucket was going down causing another bucket to come up.

So the fox jumped into the bucket at the top and his weight immediately made it to drop to the bottom, where he could drink plenty of water he desired.

But after sometime, he realized that he could not get backup. But the fox did not get depressed. He knew that the world has lot of fools. So he waited for someone to come.

At about forenoon, a goat came that way. She peeped into the well and saw the fox there. "What are you doing there, Mr.Fox?" asked the goat. "I came here to drink water. It is the best I have ever tasted. Come and see for yourself", replied the clever fox.

Without thinking even a bit, the goat jumped into the well. She quenched her thirst and looked for the way to get out.

The fox said, "I've an idea. Stand on your hind legs. I'll climb on your head and go out. Then I shall help you too". The silly goat did so and the fox got out of the well. But as soon as he was up, the fox bid farewell to the goat and made to leave.

"Wait a minute," shouted the goat, "You promised me to get me back up". "Who promised?" asked the fox. "If you were wise, you would have never got in, without seeing how to get out".

Moral : Look before you leap.

The Lion and the Mouse

It was a hot summer day in a forest. A lion after having a good meals was fast asleep in the cool shade of a big tree. The lion had a sound sleep that it did not know what was happening around it.

A playful mouse lived in a nearby hole. Suddenly the mouse came out of its hole and it noticed the sleeping lion. The playful mouse was unmindful of the lion's strength. He was ticled by a funny idea. It thought of walking the lion by running over the lion's body.

But to it's bad luck, the lion woke up and got it by it's strong paw. The lion roared loudly and said, "How dare you are to run on my body and I am going to eat and fininsh your story". Suddenly the mouse begged to the lion, "Please forgive me and spare my life, sir; I may repay your mercy someday".

The lion was pleased with the silly mouse and let it go with a smile. A few days later, unfortunately the lion was caught in a hunter's net under the same tree where it met the silly mouse. The lion roared loudly in pain.

The mouse which was sleeping, came out of it's hole on hearing the lion's roar. It thought that it was the right time to repay the lion's mercy. So in a moment it nibbled the net which trapped the lion and set the lion free.

Moral : Small things can do big jobs.

The Strength of the United Bulls

Once up on a time there lived three bulls in a thick forest. They were good friends and kept themselves always together. All of them were strong and hefty. On seeing their unity, other dangerous animals in the forest were not dare enough to come closer to them.

A leopard who was living in the same forest often saw the bulls. Its mouth always watered and it wanted to make the bulls as his meal. But on seeing their unity, the leopard was afraid to go near the bulls.

The leopard thought hard and atlast it claimed the help of a wicked jackal. They both thought a lot and wanted to create a bad fight among the bulls to divide all the three. As a result they moved with their plan. At last the three bulls were divided and they moved away from each other.

Expecting for this moment, the leopard attacked the first bull and feasted on it. Later the leopard was able to kill the other bulls, also on the following days.

Moral : United we stand, divided we fall.

The Grumbling Peacock

There was a dense forest where many birds and animals lived happily. On one fine rainy season a peacock was dancing happily by unfolding its rich feather. While dancing the peacock began to sing loudly in joyous mood.

But suddenly on hearing its rough voice all the birds and animals burst into laughter. The peacock's face fell and tears came down from its eyes.

Suddenly at that time, a nightingale came and sat on the tree nearby the peacock. It began to sing beautiful songs enjoying the pleasant rainy season. Everyone loved its song and praised it. The peacock thought, "If I sing a song everyone laughs at me. How unlucky indeed I was". The peacock began to lament.

Surprisingly there appeared Juno, the wife of Jupiter. And she asked the peacock "What makes you so sad, Mr.Peacock?". The peacock grumbled "I have got such a beautiful body, that all praise it. But my voice is very rough and harsh. It is of no use to have this beauty".

On hearing this Juno said, "Never grumble over your God. God has given various gifts to every creature. To you beauty, to the eagle strength, to the nightingale good voice and so on". On hearing this the peacock realized its mistake and it conveyed its thanks to Juno.

Moral : Learn to live happily with what God had given to us.

Golden Eggs

Once upon a time there lived an old couple in a village. As they prayed daily to god, they had been gifted a beautiful goose that laid a golden egg everyday. They were indeed quite rich soon. But the old man was not happy with what he got daily. He was a greedy type of man.

The old man wanted to get all the golden eggs from the goose at a single go. So, he thought hard and at last got a great plan. He decided to kill the goose and to get all the eggs at the single stroke.

So, the next morning when the goose laid the golden egg, he caught hold of it and with the help of his wife, he chopped off the neck of the goose. When he cut open the body of the goose he was shocked to see that there were no golden egg inside the stomach of the goose.

The old man’s sorrow was untold. He become poorer and poorer day after day. At last, he became a pauper.

Moral : Evil planning have reverse ending.
