The Hare and the Tortoise

Once a hare went to a pool to quench his thirst. There he chanced to see a slow-moving tortoise and mocked at it. The tortoise felt pinched and challenged the hare for a race. The hare was surprised to see a tortoise challenging for a race. So it accepted the challenge with a smile and a day was fixed for it.

On the fixed day, the race began early in the morning. As expected the hare left the tortoise far behind. After reaching a certain distance the hare felt hungry. So it stopped and began to eat blades of the green grass.

Having his stomach filled, the hare felt sleepy. He said to himself. "Let me wait for the tortoise, as soon as the tortoise comes, I'll jump up and win the race".

Seeing a shady bush nearby, he laid down under it. Soon he felt asleep there itself. As the tortoise was quite away the hare had no worry. So it had a sound sleep. As for the tortoise, it plugged along its path slowly and it passed away the sleeping hare. The tortoise won the race, silently passing by the sleeping hare.

When the hare awoke it was terribly late. He feared that the tortoise might have passed by him. At that time it heard the clapping sound of the other animals and the hare found that his rival tortoise was already there as a winner.

Moral : Slow and steady wins the race.
